Archbishop Sentamu Academy is at an exciting time in its development.  An 11-18 academy sponsored by the Diocese of York, we achieved “Good with Outstanding Features” in our OfSTED inspection in 2014, “Outstanding” in our section 48 SIAMS inspection, and have enjoyed four successive years of strongly rising exam results.  In 2013 63% of students gained 5+ A* to C including English and Maths, and 100% achieved 5+ A* to C (up from 29% in 2009). This had led to the academy being in the top 50 most improved schools nationally for two consecutive periods: 2009-2012, and also 2010-2013.  This year, we were also 108th nationally for achievement of students in receipt of the pupil premium.  Equally importantly, we enjoy success in sports and the Performing Arts; our students have won the National Rock Challenge competition twice, and students have taken part in sporting tours in both Spain and Australia.

Archbishop Sentamu Academy (ASA) is the lead academy in the Sentamu Academy Learning Trust (SALT).  The Trust sits at the forefront of the education agenda, bringing together ASA, an Alternative Provision Academy and three primary academies to form a powerful network, transforming education for young people in Hull.

Required for September 2015: Head of MfL and Internationalism – MPS/UPS plus TLR 1a

Archbishop Sentamu Academy is an 11-18 academy in East Hull, judged “good with outstanding features” by Ofsted in February 2014, and the lead academy in the Sentamu Academy Learning Trust, a multi academy trust which comprises ASA itself, ASPIRE AP academy, and 3 local primary academies.

Following the retirement of our Head of Languages, we now require a dynamic and skilled practitioner to lead our team of enthusiastic and successful language teachers.

We currently offer French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Results have been rising over the past few years, and this year students are undertaking the full Mandarin GCSE for the first time. The academy has recently gained Confucius Classroom status, an achievement of which we are proud. We also teach Mandarin in 5 of our partner primary schools, including the 3 primary academies in our trust. This makes us the largest centre for Mandarin in the North of England.

A significant proportion of students take languages through to GCSE, and all are popular subjects; our ambition is to increase further the number of students taking languages at GCSE level.

The academy has a long-standing exchange programme with Da Cheng School in Beijing, but students also get the opportunity to visit other countries, including Spain, through a range of projects including sporting and geographical projects, some of which receive Comenius funding.

In addition to these links, the academy also has strong links with Poland and Sierra Leone, where we support a medical centre attached to a secondary school. We are very committed to developing an international ethos, and have in the past won the “international school of the year” award.

As head of languages and internationalism, you will lead the drive to raise standards in these key GCSEs, working alongside a talented team of individuals. You will also develop further our broader international links, seeking to establish stronger links with a school in France to ensure that all students have the opportunity at some point to visit the country whose language they are studying.

There is significant scope to develop both the languages and the internationalism roles of this post, which could result in it being re-graded to reflect its wider scope at an appropriate point. As such, this post represents an exciting opportunity for a committed professional who wants to develop their career further and prepare for senior leadership.
