Sport and Performing Arts

Sport

Students at Archbishop Sentamu Acacdemy achieve well in sport, thanks to a proactive philosophy of encouraging everyone to take part in competitive or social activities, according to ability and preference. In addition to the statutory two hours a week of high quality PE teaching, there are thriving after-school and lunch-time sports clubs for all year groups.

The priority is to get all students involved in an activity that they enjoy, with the aim of improving health, teamwork and self-esteem.

Opportunities to take part in competitive sports are offered in football, netball, rugby and athletics. Recently, teams from the school have won city and county competitions in five-a-side football, rounders, netball and rugby.

Those who prefer the social aspects of sport are well catered for with dance, aerobics, gymnastics and more.

The school links with local agencies to bring extra dimensions to PE for students. This may include team coaching from Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull Football Club, as well as more unusual activities such as street dancing.

Performing Arts

A vibrant performing arts agenda, nurtured over a number of years on this site, has been carried over to the new Archbishop Sentamu Academy. The performing arts department encourages participation by all students in activities centered on teamwork, and director and leadership skills.

Students develop self-confidence and self-esteem through public performances, both at the school and other venues, which are always very well attended by parents and the community.

One outstanding recent achievement has been the Rock Challenge, an Australian initiative that encourages youngsters to achieve a ‘natural high’ through performances that combine music, dance and drama. The school was highly acclaimed for its achievement and has gone on to compete nationally and internationally in Rock Challenge.
