About our Sponsor

Diocese of YorkThe Diocese of York

The Diocese of York is the Sponsor of Archbishop Sentamu Academy as part of its mission to serve young people and their communities.

Church schools are at the heart of the Church of England's mission. They serve children and families of all faiths and of none, providing a high quality education and seeking to enhance the communities in which they live and work. The Academy is part of a family of 127 Church schools across the Diocese.

The Archbishop Sentamu Academy will develop as a centre of educational excellence founded on Christian principles and with a Christian ethos. It will be committed to nurturing and valuing every member of its community and to an inclusive approach to all aspects of Academy life.

Through its care for the spiritual and physical well-being of students and staff, the Academy will aim to:

  • raise aspirations and achievement for all
  • nurture confident, open-minded young people with a ‘can do’ attitude and an articulate voice on their community and their future, and
  • encourage a love of learning, eagerness to succeed and willingness to participate.

The Archbishop of York, the Most Reverend and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu is an enthusiastic supporter of and advocate for the Academy. He has said:

“This will be more than just a school. Its students will come from the locality and be shown that what they can do for their neighbourhood is at least as important as what they can do for themselves. The Academy’s ethos will be Christian: open to all and for the benefit of all. We are committed to making a difference to the lives of young people and their community.'

Joined-up approach

Having Hull City Council as an Associate Sponsor is critical to delivering a joined-up approach to transforming learning and opportunity for all Hull’s children and young people. As Associate Sponsor, the City Council will focus on ensuring a consistently high standard of learning is available for all pupils across the City and will establish and maintain strong links between the Academy, the Learning Partnership, other schools and “best practice” so that all schools can in the future benefit from cutting-edge teaching and learning tools and approaches.

Archbishop Sentamu Academy will help trailblaze Hull’s aspirations to become a City of exceptional achievement and play a vital role in the East of the City, developing an Academy with aspirations to help students achieve “excellence” as a norm and playing its part as one of a range of new secondary schools across the City determined to bring outstanding learning and attainment for all students in Hull.
